The Unconscious Sermon: Carrying the Atmosphere of Heaven
Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt a sense of peace, or perhaps tension? Every one of us carries an atmosphere with us. It’s an unspoken, unconscious influence that speaks volumes before we even say a word.
As Christians, our highest calling is to carry with us the very atmosphere of heaven.
The Foundation: A Life of Obedience and Blessing
Our journey begins with a choice. In Deuteronomy 28, God lays out a profound principle: if we diligently obey and walk with Him, blessings will overtake us. Imagine that—God Himself chasing you down to pour out His goodness. This isn’t about earning salvation; it’s about entering a special covenant relationship, like a marriage, where we receive the unique joys and privileges of being in the family of God.
The converse is also true. God loves us too much to let us wander comfortably toward destruction. Sometimes, He must allow consequences or withhold blessings to wake us up and draw us back to Himself, the only source of true life.
The Most Convincing Sermon You'll Ever Preach
This brings us to the heart of the matter. In Acts of the Apostles, we read a stunning truth about the Apostle Paul:
"Paul carried with him the atmosphere of heaven. All who associated with him felt the influence of his union with Christ... The unstudied, unconscious influence of a holy life is the most convincing sermon that can be given in favor of Christianity."
Let that sink in.
-
Argument may provoke opposition.
-
A godly example has a power that is impossible to wholly resist.
You are preaching a sermon every single day. The question is, what is your unconscious influence saying? Does it radiate the peace, kindness, and joy of Christ, or does it carry the bitterness, negativity, and anxiety of the world?
How to Cultivate a Heavenly Atmosphere
This influence isn’t something you can fake or study your way into. It’s the natural result of a life transformed by staying close to Jesus.
1. Guard Your Inputs: A "John the Baptist" Lifestyle The world is constantly programming us. The music we listen to, the media we consume—it all shapes our spirit. The devil is a slick liar who uses music and culture to short-circuit our happiness. He offers songs about our anger, our loneliness, and our pain, but the happiest songs are the ones about Jesus.
If you’re in doubt about something in your life—your music, your entertainment—practice a "John the Baptist" lifestyle. Cut it out for a while. See how your spirit changes. We must be ruthless in protecting our hearts and the hearts of our children. Teach them the hymns of faith that point them to their Creator.
2. Be a Logistical Witness You don’t need a theology degree to be a powerful witness. You just need to be close to Jesus and pay attention. God is the master logistician, orchestrating "divine appointments" every day.
-
The person with two items behind you in the grocery line.
-
The cyclist you accidentally wave to at a scenic overlook.
-
The contractor who does honest work.
Your job is not to force a conversation, but to be so filled with Christ’s love that you naturally offer kindness, a listening ear, or a simple prayer. As the quote says, when your life exemplifies the truth, your words—when you do speak—carry "convincing power."
3. Draw Near to Jesus—Consciously and Consistently You cannot give what you do not have. The "unstudied, unconscious" influence flows from a conscious, daily choice to sit at the feet of Jesus.
"Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith." (Hebrews 12:2)
Spend time in the Word and in prayer. Linger in His presence. It’s in these moments that we, like Moses, are transformed by His glory, and that glory lingers on us as we go about our day.
A Story of Unshakable Faith
Consider the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15. She was an outsider, from a culture steeped in darkness. Yet, she saw something in Jesus that His own disciples missed. Despite being initially ignored and then seemingly insulted, she persevered. Why?
She could not see a compassionate God hiding His compassion. She saw through the divine object lesson to the unwavering love in His eyes. Her faith was in His character, not His current actions. And Jesus, unable to resist such faith, commended her and granted her request, healing her daughter instantly.
This is our God. He will never turn away a sincere cry for help. He does not censure human weakness. When you fail, when you struggle, run to Him, not from Him.
Your Mission Field is Closer Than You Think
If you feel discouraged in your witness, remember this:
-
Your first mission field is your home and your church. Relate to everyone as if they need a fresh drink from the well of salvation. Be a source of life and encouragement right where you are.
-
Go back to your first love. If your walk has grown cold, return to the place where you last saw the light. Rekindle the simple, vibrant faith you once had.
-
Embrace a simpler life. Turn off the noise. Cut out the things that short-circuit your joy. Make room for God to fill you with His presence and His song.
Conclusion
The burden of winning souls is not on your shoulders; it is on God’s. Your responsibility is to draw so close to Jesus that the unstudied, unconscious influence of His life in you becomes the most convincing sermon you will ever preach.
