Finding Your Identity in Christ

5-Day Devotional Study Guide

Title: The Voice Behind You: Learning to Listen in a Noisy World

Key Scripture: Isaiah 30:21 – “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right or whenever you turn to the left.”

Introduction for the Reader

The preacher shares a habit: on airplanes, he looks for people without headphones to see if God is opening a door. He also shares a story of picking up a hitchhiking Jehovah’s Witness—a divine appointment that interrupted his tight schedule.

This guide is an invitation to examine your own listening posture. Are you too busy to hear God? Do you protect your “idols”? Over the next five days, we will explore what it means to be God’s covenant people who humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Day 1: The Divine Interruption – Listening Beyond the Schedule

Theme: God often speaks when we are most inconveniently busy. Scripture Reading: Isaiah 30:18-21; Luke 10:29-37 (The Good Samaritan)

Devotional Thought: The preacher had a tight flight schedule and a sick parishioner to visit. Yet, he saw a man hitchhiking and felt the Holy Spirit say, “Stop.” He writes, “I would have gladly made a convenience of my tight schedule to ignore the voice… but I decided I needed to stop.” That interruption led to a spiritual conversation. True listening often requires sacrificing our carefully planned timetables. The “voice behind you” is rarely heard when we are rushing.

Reflection Questions:

  • When was the last time I ignored a “holy interruption” because I was in a hurry?

  • Is my schedule so full that I have left no margin for God to redirect me?

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for valuing my agenda over Your appointments. Today, give me the courage to stop when You say stop, and to speak when You say speak. Help me to see the hitchhiker in my own life. Amen.

Application Challenge: Today, intentionally leave 15 minutes of “white space” in your schedule. Use that time to simply ask God, “Is there anyone You want me to notice?”

Day 2: The “If” of Covenant – Conditions That Protect Love

Theme: God’s love is unconditional, but the covenant has conditions for our protection. Scripture Reading: 2 Chronicles 7:12-15; Deuteronomy 7:9

Devotional Thought: The preacher draws a critical distinction: God makes the sun rise on the evil and the good, but covenantal blessings are reserved for those who have made a covenant with Him. He says, “God is not a tit-for-tat tyrant… but He relates in covenant relationship.” The word “if” (If my people humble themselves) is not God being stingy; it is God protecting the relationship. He will withhold blessings not to punish, but to redirect you from a love affair with Satan.

Reflection Questions:

  • Do I view God’s “if” as a burden or as an invitation to intimacy?

  • In what area of my life am I walking away from the covenant (bitterness, idolatry, neglect of prayer)?

Prayer: Covenant-keeping God, thank You that You don’t release me when I wander. Show me where I have treated our relationship like a contract instead of a covenant. Restore to me the joy of walking in Your “if.” Amen.

Key Quote to Remember: “When you enter into that covenant with God, God is not willing to release you any more than the devil is willing to release you when you’re walking away from the world.”

Day 3: The Idol in the Newspaper – Recognizing What We Love More

Theme: Whatever you seek first before God is your functional god. Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:18-22 (The Parable of the Sower – the thorny ground); Ezekiel 14:3-6

Devotional Thought: The preacher shares a confession from a pastor who admitted that he opened the sports section of the newspaper before he opened his Bible. He calls this an idol. The preacher notes, “I have never had anybody to this day say, ‘Yeah, you’re right, pastor. That’s an idol in my life.’ We protect our idols.” Idols are not just statues; they are the “competitors you love more than Jesus.” The devil doesn’t need you to be an atheist; he just needs you to be distracted by something good (sports, news, work) so that you choke out the voice of God.

Reflection Questions:

  • What is the first thing I look at/think about when I wake up?

  • What “newspaper section” (social media, news, hobby) has become a competitor to my quiet time with God?

Prayer: Search me, O God. I know I have pedestals in my heart that I don’t want You to touch. Reveal my idols today. Give me the courage of Gideon to topple them, knowing that You alone are the real God. Amen.

Action Step: Identify one “competitor” (e.g., checking email, sports scores, news feed) that you do before your morning prayer. This week, reverse the order. Put God first.

Day 4: The Wounds of a Friend – Hearing Truth Through Others

Theme: God often speaks His “voice behind you” through a spouse, a friend, or a critic. Scripture Reading: Proverbs 27:5-6; Ephesians 4:15

Devotional Thought: The preacher shares a vulnerable moment: 20 years ago, his wife told him, “You sound bitter.” He admits, “She shot the arrow… it lodged right where it needed to be.” He had been nursing bitterness toward church leadership. He says, “If we’re going to hear a word behind us saying, ‘This is the way,’ we better form relationships with God and other people who can break through when we need some wrong idea broken up.” The hardest testing truth is not theology; it’s the mirror God holds up through a loved one.

Reflection Questions:

  • Do I have a relationship with someone who loves me enough to tell me when I am wrong?

  • When someone critiques me, do I get defensive, or do I get on my knees?

Prayer: Lord, give me a teachable spirit. I don’t want to be a “mere reflector of other men’s thoughts,” but I also don’t want to be so proud that I reject Your correction through my spouse or friends. Help me to say, ‘Speak, Lord, even if it hurts.’ Amen.

Memory Verse: “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” (Proverbs 27:6)

Day 5: The Refining Fire – Surviving the Valley of Waiting

Theme: God speaks “No” to something good so He can say “Yes” to something better. Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 19:9-13 (Elijah in the cave); Malachi 3:2-3

Devotional Thought: The preacher lost his job. He admits, “Everything inside of me wanted to take a high-profile job to remove the stigmata… but God said, ‘No, Ron, that’s not what you’re called to do.’” He calls this “the valley of waiting.” He reminds us that like Elijah, we often run in the wrong direction, but God follows us. The voice of God was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire—it was the still small voice. If you are in a season of waiting, unemployment, or confusion, God has not abandoned you. He is refining the gold. The dross is being taken off.

Reflection Questions:

  • Am I running from my problems (like Elijah) or waiting for the still small voice?

  • What “No” from God has actually protected me from a lesser life?

Prayer: Father, the waiting is hard. I want a quick fix and a high-profile job to prove my worth. But I trust the Refiner’s fire. Even if I never cross the Jordan in this life, let me see the Promised Land from the mountain. Speak, Lord. I am listening. Amen.

Final Benediction (from the sermon): “The most humble people in the world can be the most courageous because it’s not about them… He never shows you more than you can bear. Praise the Lord.”

How to Use This Guide for Group Study

  • Each day: Read the Scripture, read the devotional thought, answer the reflection questions (journal your answers), and pray the prayer aloud.

  • Day 4 Challenge: If you are married or have a close friend, ask them: “Is there any area where you see bitterness or pride in me that I am blind to?” Then, just listen. Do not defend.

  • Sabbath Focus: On the 7th day, re-read Isaiah 30:21. Spend 30 minutes in silence asking God to point out the “right or left” turn you are about to make.

May the Lord guide you, and may you hear the voice behind you saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”
