Biblical Principles that govern humanity | Pastor Ron Kelly
A 5-Day Devotional Guide: "The Love That Will Not Let You Go"
Inspired by the Sermon on John 4 and Romans 2:4
This devotional is designed to help you internalize the message of God's persistent, gracious love. Each day focuses on a key theme from the sermon, guiding you from understanding God's character to applying His principles in your relationships with others.
How to Use This Guide:
-
Find a Quiet Moment: Set aside 15-20 minutes each day.
-
Read the Scripture: Let God's Word set the tone.
-
Reflect: Ponder the questions. Be honest with yourself and God.
-
Pray: Use the provided prayer as a starting point for your own conversation with God.
Day 1: The Foundation of Repentance
Theme: Understanding that it is God's kindness, not condemnation, that draws us to Him.
Scripture Reading: Romans 2:1-4 "Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?" (v. 4, NIV)
Reflection:
-
Think of a time you were deeply sorry for a mistake. Was it because you were harshly reprimanded, or because you realized you had hurt someone who loved you deeply?
-
How does viewing God primarily as a "rewarder of those who seek him" (Hebrews 11:6) change your motivation for coming to Him?
-
In what areas of your life do you need to more fully believe in the "riches of his kindness"?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that your love is the foundation of my change of heart. Forgive me for the times I have taken your kindness for granted. Help me to see your patience and goodness today, and let it lead me into a deeper, more sincere repentance. Amen.
Day 2: The Unstudied Influence
Theme: Cultivating a genuine, Christ-like character that naturally draws others.
Scripture Reading: John 4:1-9 "He had to go through Samaria on the way." (v. 4, NLT) "A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink.'" (v. 7, ESV)
Reflection:
-
The sermon spoke of the "unstudied, unconscious influence of a godly life." What does this phrase mean to you?
-
Jesus broke social barriers (Jew/Samaritan, man/woman) simply by being present and making a request. Who are the "unlikely" people in your world that you might be avoiding?
-
Is your faith more about performing for others, or about an authentic connection with Christ that naturally influences your actions?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I want my life to have the same magnetic pull that yours did. Strip away any pretense or performance. Let my actions, my words, and my very presence be so filled with your Spirit that others are drawn to your goodness in me. Amen.
Day 3: The Honest Conversation
Theme: The courage to be honest with God and ourselves, which is the gateway to healing.
Scripture Reading: John 4:10-18 "He told her, 'Go, call your husband and come back.' 'I have no husband,' she replied. Jesus said to her, 'You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.'" (v. 16-18, NIV)
Reflection:
-
Jesus knew the woman's story but gave her the opportunity to be honest. What part of your "story" (shame, failure, insecurity) do you need to bring into the light with Him today?
-
Why do you think the woman tried to change the subject to a theological debate (v. 20)? What "distractions" do you use to avoid dealing with the real issues in your heart?
-
Notice that Jesus stated the truth about her life without shame or condemnation. How does this give you confidence to be honest with Him?
Prayer: God, you see everything about me and still you ask for a drink, still you seek a relationship. Give me the courage to be utterly honest with you. I bring you my brokenness, my shame, and my failed attempts at happiness. I have no husband; I have no hope apart from you. Speak your truth into my life. Amen.
Day 4: Worship in Spirit and Truth
Theme: Moving beyond religious rules to a dynamic, grace-filled relationship with God.
Scripture Reading: John 4:19-24 "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." (v. 23-24, NIV)
Reflection:
-
The sermon noted that Jesus was "full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). How can your faith become unbalanced—focused only on truth (legalism) or only on grace (license)?
-
What does it mean to you to worship "in spirit"? (Think: authenticity, connection, heart-led).
-
What does it mean to worship "in truth"? (Think: doctrinal integrity, honesty, alignment with God's Word).
-
How can you seek to balance both grace and truth in your personal worship and church life this week?
Prayer: Father, I don't want a religion of mere rules or empty emotion. I want a real relationship with you. Teach me to worship you in spirit—with all my heart. Teach me to worship you in truth—aligning my life with your Word. Make me the kind of worshiper you are seeking. Amen.
Day 5: The Mission of a Restored Life
Theme: Embracing our calling to share the love we have received.
Scripture Reading: John 4:28-30, 39-42 "Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 'Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?'... Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony..." (v. 28-30, 39, NIV)
Reflection:
-
The woman left her water jar—the very reason she came to the well. What symbolic "water jar" (old identity, source of fulfillment) do you need to leave behind to share your story?
-
Her testimony was simple: "He told me everything I ever did." She was honest about her brokenness and her encounter with Christ. Who in your life needs to hear that God knows everything about them and still loves them?
-
The sermon mentioned that the church is a "rag tag band of people" becoming a family. How can you actively participate in making your church a more healing and beautiful place for the broken?
Prayer: Lord, you have given me back my dignity and my story. Thank you for the love that will not let me go. Now, use me. Give me the boldness of this Samaritan woman to point others to you. Help me to see my church as a family and my community as my mission field. Let my life be a testament to your restoring power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
