How Not to be Afraid | Pastor Ron Kelly

Sermon Study Guide: "How Not to Be Afraid"

Key Scriptures: Isaiah 41:8-16; Mark 4:35-41 Main Speaker: Pastor Ron Kelly Central Theme: Fear is a debilitating force that stands in opposition to faith, but through a growing, practical trust in God's character and promises, we can live courageous, love-driven lives that impact the world.

Opening Reflection

Pastor Ron begins by reflecting on Christ's sacrifice and His simple, human need for a drink of water while on the cross.

  • What does this image of the Creator of rivers, dying in thirst, reveal to you about the nature of God's love and His solidarity with our human experience?

Core Message & Discussion Questions

1. God's Promise in Our Fear (Isaiah 41)

"Do not fear, for I am with you... I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10)

  • Discussion Questions:

    • The progression in Isaiah 41:10 is "strengthen," "help," and "uphold." What does this sequence tell you about how God intervenes in our moments of weakness and fear?

    • God calls Israel "worm Jacob" (Isaiah 41:14) not to insult, but to contextualize His grace. How does acknowledging our own weakness and "nothingness" actually make God's promises to help us more powerful and comforting?

2. The Anatomy of Fear (Mark 4:35-41)

"They were absorbed in their own efforts to save themselves... They forgot Jesus was on board." (Paraphrase from Desire of Ages)

  • Discussion Questions:

    • In the storm, the disciples' fear escalated because they became "absorbed in their own efforts to save themselves." What does this look like in our own lives? Share a time when you were tempted to rely solely on your own efforts in a crisis.

    • Pastor Ron stated, "Fear is faith running in reverse." What does this mean? How does fear actively undermine our trust in God?

    • Jesus asked the disciples, "Why are you afraid? How is it that you have no faith?" (Mark 4:40). Was this a harsh rebuke or a sorrowful question? What is the fundamental connection between fear and a lack of faith?

3. The Antidote: Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

"There is no way the Seventh Day Adventist Church is going to impact a neurotically nervous and security-focused world without a completely different experience."

  • Key Verse: 1 John 4:18

  • Discussion Questions:

    • Pastor Ron defined the "perfect love" that casts out fear as a "self-sacrificing love." Why is a focus on self-preservation the very fuel for fear?

    • How does actively engaging in mission and loving service to others ("reaching the lost") become a practical way to overcome our personal fears?

    • He warned that it's possible to be a theologically orthodox Adventist while living a "fearful, selfish life." What are the symptoms of this condition in an individual or a church?

4. The Practical Journey from Fear to Faith

"You can't learn to trust until you have a few moments when everything's hanging on the one thing you need to trust."

  • Discussion Questions:

    • Pastor Ron shared that God grows our confidence through incremental steps of faith. What is a "little step" of faith God might be asking you to take this week that feels slightly beyond your comfort zone?

    • He connected fear with finances, challenging his church to spend more on mission rather than just saving for security. Why is our use of money such a clear indicator of whether we are operating in faith or fear?

    • He quoted Edwin Friedman: "Most people will live with a chronic condition because they're afraid of the remedy which may cause a bit of acute pain." What "chronic condition" (a habit, a broken relationship, a spiritual plateau) are you tolerating because you fear the short-term pain of addressing it?

Personal Application & Commitment

  1. Identify Your Storm: Identify one specific area of your life where fear is currently the dominant force (e.g., finances, health, family, witnessing, the future). Write it down.

  2. Pray the Promise: Take the promise from Isaiah 41:10 and personalize it in prayer. "God, you see my fear of ______. Your Word says you are with me. I ask you to strengthen me, help me, and uphold me with your righteous right hand in this situation."

  3. Take a Step of Faith: Commit to one concrete action this week that directly counters that fear with faith. This could be:

    • Having a difficult, loving conversation you've been avoiding.

    • Making a financial commitment to a ministry that stretches you.

    • Sharing your testimony with someone.

    • Volunteering for a ministry that feels intimidating.

Closing Prayer Points

  • Thank God that His perfect love for you is not based on your performance, but on His character.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any area of your life where fear, rather than faith, is in control.

  • Pray for the courage to take the next "incremental step" of faith He is placing before you.

  • Ask God to make your local church a community known for its courageous, love-driven faith, not its fearful self-preservation.
