Sermon Study Guide: "The Simplicity of Sincere Christianity"

Key Scripture: Acts 5:11-12 Main Speaker: Pastor Ron Kelly Central Theme: The power and necessity of genuine, sincere Christian love and unity within the church, especially in times of turmoil and dysfunction.

Opening Reflection

  1. Pastor Ron began by affirming the hard work of the camp meeting organizers and the blessing of Christian fellowship. He described the church as an "outpost for God in a revolted world."

    • What does the phrase "outpost for God" mean to you?

    • Recall a time when you felt particularly blessed and encouraged by the family of God. What made that experience so meaningful?

Core Message & Discussion Questions

1. The Foundation: Grace Before Truth

"You can't even hear the truth about yourself until you've heard how much you're loved and that it'll be okay when you get the bad news."

  • Key Verse: John 1:14 (Jesus came "full of grace and truth").

  • Discussion Questions:

    • Why is it so important that grace comes before truth? How does receiving grace change our ability to hear difficult truths?

    • In your own life, have you experienced a situation where grace opened the door for truth? Share if you feel comfortable.

    • How can we, as a church, ensure we are leading with grace in our interactions with members and the community?

2. The Call to Be a "Fountain," Not a "Drain"

"You're either a fountain or a drain... You don't have to make yourself a fountain. You just need to go to the fountain."

  • Key Verses: Proverbs 10:11, 1 Peter 4:10-11

  • Discussion Questions:

    • What are the practical characteristics of a person who is a "fountain" in their church, home, and workplace?

    • What does it mean in practice to "go to the Fountain" (Jesus) to become a fountain for others?

    • Self-assessment: In the past week, have your words and actions been more fountain-like or drain-like? What is one step you can take to be more of a fountain?

3. The Challenge of True Unity

"Unity of feeling is an absolute human impossibility without the Spirit being present in every individual heart."

  • Key Concept: The early church had "unity of feeling, thought, and action" (Acts 2:46, Acts 4:32).

  • Discussion Questions:

    • Pastor Ron distinguished between unity of action (which can be forced) and unity of feeling (which is spiritual). Why is unity of feeling so powerful and so rare?

    • He stated, "Religion is caught before it's taught." How have you "caught" faith from others? How can we create an environment where this happens more naturally?

    • Identify one relationship in your church or family where unity is a challenge. What is one thing you can do, with the Spirit's help, to move toward "unity of feeling"?

4. The Power of a "Favorable Construct"

"Love puts the most favorable construct on somebody else's actions."

  • Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 13:7 (Love "bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.")

  • Discussion Questions:

    • What does it mean to put the "most favorable construct" on someone's actions? Is this the same as being naive?

    • How does gossip and negative talk destroy our ability to do this? How can we "set a watch before our lips" (Psalm 141:3)?

    • Think of a recent action by a church leader or fellow member that frustrated you. What is the most favorable explanation you can come up with for their behavior?

5. The Path Forward: Doing Justly, Loving Mercy, Walking Humbly

"Let's get back to doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly."

  • Key Verse: Micah 6:8

  • Discussion Questions:

    • Do Justly: What does it look like to "do justly" within the church family? How do we balance justice with grace?

    • Love Mercy: Why is actively loving mercy different from just occasionally showing it?

    • Walk Humbly: Why is humility the key to holding justice and mercy together? How does walking humbly with God affect our relationships with people?

Personal Application & Commitment

  1. The Relationship Challenge: Identify one relationship (in your family, church, or community) that needs the healing balm of sincere, gracious Christianity. Commit to one specific action this week to be a "fountain" in that relationship (e.g., praying for them, offering a word of encouragement, seeking reconciliation).

  2. The Speech Challenge: For the next 24 hours, make a conscious effort to put the "most favorable construct" on everyone's actions and to refrain from any negative or critical speech about others. Journal about how this changes your perspective.

  3. The Leadership Challenge: Whether you hold a formal position or not, you have influence. Commit to praying this week for your local church leaders, conference leaders, and General Conference leaders, asking God to give them wisdom and to fill them with His Spirit.

Closing Prayer Points

  • Thank God for His overwhelming grace that allows us to face truth.

  • Ask for the Holy Spirit's power to make you a fountain of encouragement.

  • Pray for a spirit of unity, sincerity, and love in your local church and the global Adventist Church.

  • Ask for the courage to "do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly" in all your relationships.
