"The Amish Are Coming! The Amish Are Coming!"
That alert created a flurry of activity. Not red-clad troops with weapons (remember your American history and the revolutionary war?), but bearded workers with tools, are headed for AMI. All preparations must be completed before they arrive!
As soon as the "sand brigade" had finished its work, crews from Tactical Tree Experts and Master's Builders launched into the retaining wall project. One hundred forty feet of wall, eight feet tall and eight inches thick, is required to hold back the sand that levels the building site.
First came the concrete footer, reinforced with rebar. Then wooden boards with steel frames were fastened together, much like a seamstress pinning flat seams on a pair of jeans — except these wall-form pins are three inches long, an inch wide, and must be hammered into place with far more force than any sewing pin requires. The forms were fitted together to create the shell of a wall.
Next, a concrete boom pump truck arrived to fill the forms. Its long chute and dangling five-inch hose jettisoned concrete with enough force to knock an unwary handler off the top of the wall. In total, the pump truck delivered 42 cubic yards of concrete. A visual equivalent would be roughly 3,780 five-gallon buckets!
At last, the concrete cured and the forms were removed (which sounds easy, but certainly isn't). And — hear the drumroll — a retaining wall stood in place!
But the job wasn't finished yet. More sand (600 tons) had to be hauled in to backfill the wall. Because the "Frost Laws" were still in effect, dump trucks couldn't carry full loads. And time was running short because… "The Amish are coming!"
Thankfully, the Amish agreed to delay their arrival by a few days, giving time to complete the backfill and re-grade the site. By the time you read this, the Amish construction crew will have arrived to raise the shell of our first AMI building.
Stay tuned for the next update on the revolutionary work of AMI!
